Mary “Mae” Wetmore died on Friday, November 7, 2014, encircled by her children, at her home in Greenwich, Connecticut. She died after a long series of progressively worsening medical problems. She was born on August 27, 1930 to Irish immigrants Thomas and Ann Kealey in New Rochelle, New York. Mary survived the hunger and cold of the Great Depression and moved to Port Chester, New York at age 10. She joined Our Lady of Mercy Church and eventually graduated from Port Chester High School. She worked as a telephone operator for many years and was a life-long member of Club 13 telephone operators. Mary met the late John Wetmore, a local carpenter, and they were happily married on October 5, 1957. John passed away in 1987. They raised four children and Mary was a devoted mother always cooking and baking for them, traveling everywhere with them by foot, bus or train since she never learned to drive, and being totally invested in their education wanting to ensure they had a better life through higher learning. She was famous for her kitchen table teaching adeptly helping to figure out math problems while simultaneously cooking a fabulous dinner. She was an active member of Saint Mary's Mother's Club for many years and also volunteered to teach reading to underprivileged children. Mary moved to Greenwich in 2003 where she pursued her hobbies and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a voracious reader, loved Irish music and knitting. She made the best brownies ever eaten and the most scrumptious Thanksgiving dinners.
She was a true matriarch bringing her family together for annual events like the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Greenwich and providing sage advice to her children and grandchildren. Mary was extremely generous of her time and abilities and in general a giving person always willing to help someone she thought was in need in any way that she could. She was an excellent listener and had a memory better than any one else on this planet always remembering what was important to a particular individual whether it be their favorite color or dessert as well as important milestones in their lives. Mary had a magical way of finding that purple button or odd piece of something that one of her grandchildren needed for whatever project they were currently working on. Quite simply, she was a warm and loving person who faced increasing medical issues and frailty with grit and determination. She will be sorely missed.
Mary is survived by her four children: John K. and his wife Jane of Greenwich, CT; Mariann Marshall of Port Chester, NY; Patricia, and her husband Chris Gurahian of Westport, CT and Timothy and his wife Lorraine, also of Westport, CT. She is also survived by her eight beloved grandchildren John Wetmore of Manchester, CT; James and Jennifer Wetmore of Greenwich, CT; Matthew, Lucas and Lexi Wetmore and Kelly and Zachary Gurahian, all of Westport, CT. She is also survived by her brother Tom Kealey of Enfield, CT.
Her wake will be at Gallagher's Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich on Wednesday November 12th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a funeral mass at Our Lady of Mercy Church on Thursday, November 13th at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Rye Brook, New York
