Livia Catherine Herman passed away on September 2, 2017, in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was 101. She was born in New York City on February 8, 1916 to Giacomo (Jack) and Angiolina Garbarini. She raised her family in Scarsdale, New York and, in later years, moved to the Greenwich area to be closer to family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 25 years, Walter Herman, her parents, her brothers, Arthur Gary and Peter Garbarini. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jarrett (Bill) of Edina, Minnesota, her son, Paul (Diane) of Riverside, Connecticut, her six grandchildren, Emily, Daniel, David, Zachary, Rachel and Sarah, her brother James (Dolores) and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She lived a life of humility, grace and service, always more interested in others than in herself. Her family was everything to her. She was most proud of her grandchildren, who were the shining stars of her universe. Her kindness and selflessness endeared her to everyone and she made friends wherever she went. She will be fondly remembered for her dedication to making sure that everyone was comfortable and well-fed (even if it meant sharing from her own plate)! Her feasts were the highlight of her friends’ and family’s holidays. Her incomparable homemade ravioli and sauce, which required days of preparation, were the subject of annual family “fork fights” as to who got the last serving.
Thank you to those who gave her care in the final months: the nurses at the Mews, especially Lisa and Sue, and hospice nurse Lorraine who all treated her with dignity, respect and kindness in her final days. Biggest thanks to her constant companion for the past year, Rosina, who cared for her as if she were her own mother.
Memorial service to be arranged at a later date.
