Audrey Mary Mead, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 with her loving family by her side. She was born September 19, 1929, the daughter of Thomas Lahey and Florence (Chute) Lahey. A graduate of Greenwich High School (1949), Audrey married David I. Mead in 1950. The couple built a life together and raised four loving children: Karen, Debbie, David and Robin. By her example, Audrey taught everyone around her the true meaning of love. She loved her family, loved her co-workers and friends, and was an eternal optimist throughout her 87 years.
Sadly we will miss her, but Audrey now joins her parents, husband David, and son-in-law Joe Hlavaty in service to the Lord. Audrey (Mom) is survived by her son David Mead and his wife Greta (Von Schleusingen), daughter Karen Coughlan, daughter Deborah and her husband Gerald Billone, and daughter Robin and her husband Thomas Ryan. Also among her many loves were her grandchildren: Colleen Coughlan, Jodi (Hlavaty) Savarese, Jamie (Hlavaty) Scarfi, Emmett Mead, and Kyle Ryan. Audrey was also blessed to have six great-grandchildren: Max Coughlan, Julia and Joey Savarese, Dominic, Charlotte and Roman Scarfi. Her extended family also includes her grand-daughter’s loving husbands Fran Scarfi and Joseph Savarese.
Audrey’s life of joy came not only from her family but from special friendships including her co-workers and the management of AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study) where she worked happily for many years before her retirement. She dearly loved her life and friendships as a resident of Hill House on Riverside Ave where she made her home for many years. And no week would be complete without a trip every Friday to the Greenwich Senior Center where Audrey enjoyed Bingo and companionship with her friends.
A celebration of Audrey’s life is scheduled for Tuesday, January 31st, with visitation from 4-7 PM at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home (31 Arch Street, Greenwich). A Catholic Mass and Funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 1st at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Riverside (Greenwich). Her internment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery on North Street, Greenwich.
Audrey’s son, daughters and extended family gratefully acknowledge the care and support provided by the staff at Greenwich Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to The Hill House Senior Residence in support of transportation, cultural and social activities for our cherished seniors (http://www.thehillhouse.org/donate/).
Arrangements under the direction of Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Greenwich, CT.
