He was reared in Holly Hill, SC (Orangeburg County) and was the son of the late John E. Norris and Mary Norris. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Mary Jane Archer Norris. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Norris Duncan (Jim) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and three sons, William M. Norris, Jr. (Marilou), Robert J. Norris (SueZann), and Richard A. Norris (Rhonda) all of Greenville, SC.
He loved his six grandchildren greatly and they will surely miss their Pops. Christie N. Williams (Shane) of Marietta, GA, Robert J. Norris, Jr. (Jessica) of Woodruff, Caroline N. Smart (Blake) of Memphis, TN, David J. Duncan (Mary Kathleen) of Rocky Mount, NC, John T. Duncan (Jamie) of Ft. Mill, SC, and Seth McMurchie of Charlotte, NC. He had eight great-grandchildren; Owen, Charis, Duncan, and Selah Williams and Mary Eliza, Lucy, Madeline, and Teddy Duncan.
He was a 1949 graduate of Clemson College. As a 70+ year member of IPTAY, he had served as President of the Greenville Chapter. He was member of Walden Lodge #274, 32nd degree KCCH Scottish Rite Mason, Hejaz Shrine Temple, Royal Order of Scotland, Royal Order of Jesters, and the Good Fellows Club. He had served on the Shriners Hospital for Children Board of Governors for 40+ years in the Greenville unit and was an emeritus member of that Board. He had served on the Advisory Board Council of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Greenville. He was a past Commander of the Greenville Power Squadron and also served as a SC State Constable. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corp. He was the Founder and Chairman of Norris Supply Company in Greenville, SC. He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville.
A Funeral Service will be held at Mackey Mortuary on March, 1, 2017 at 1:00 pm, with a visitation starting at 11:30 am. An interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
