William "Bill" Harrison Barbour, age 86, of Mauldin, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Bill was born in Greenville, SC on February 16, 1934 to Grace Drummond Barbour and William Van Barbour.
Bill was a retired Major in the United States Air Force where he served for 20 years. He flew 100 missions as an F-4 fighter pilot in Vietnam and also worked in Tactical Air Command. In his service to our country, Bill earned 3 Air Medals and The Distinguished Flying Cross.
Upon retirement from the Air Force he was employed by BI-LO where he formed their corporate flight department and flew for 18 years.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church of Mauldin and a former deacon and member of Dewey Craig's Sunday School class. He volunteered for the Golden Strip Relief Agency for many years. Bill was known for his great sense of humor among his family and friends.
Bill is survived by daughter Jane Barbour McVay (Wes) of Simpsonville, SC and son Steven Freeman Barbour of Simpsonville, SC; sister Graceanne Barbour of Kennebunkport, ME; sister Nancy DeAngelis of Midlothian, VA; sister Frances Martin of Greenville, SC and brother Joel Barbour of Greenville, SC; grandson Austin Wesley McVay (Kelly) of Lexington, SC and granddaughter Meredith McVay Crews (Matthew) of Campobello, SC.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Freeman Barbour; daughter-in-law Fritzi Bormann Barbour; father William Van Barbour and mother Grace Drummond Barbour.
A public viewing for Bill will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Mauldin First Baptist Church, 150 S. Main St., Mauldin, SC 29662. A funeral service with military honors will be held for Bill in the church sanctuary at 11:00am. A committal service will occur Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 12:30 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29609.
Serving as pallbearers are Wes McVay, Austin McVay, Matthew Crews, Joel Barbour, Michael Martin and Bucky Carswell.
