Born in Winston-Salem, NC, she was the only child of Gowan Hughes “Nutt” Caldwell and Margaret Cooper Whitfield.
Virginia’s early years were busy raising 3 children and running the household. She was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and kindergarten. Virginia was active in early childhood education organizations and worked for Head Start. Later in life she and Tom owned and operated Alpha Printing in Powdersville, SC, as well as taking over the contract post office there. Shortly after Tom’s sudden death in 1992 she sold the business and retired. Her next commitment was volunteering. Virginia spent many years volunteering at Greenville Memorial Hospital on the ICU visitor desk, in the ER helping provide warm blankets to patients, the Gift Shop keeping the greeting cards in good order, and would do most anything needed. She served as Volunteer Auxiliary President and received the Edna Childers award.
Virginia and Tom fell in love with square dancing in the 1980’s. They fully participated in the activity by dancing as much as possible and serving as officers in multiple square dance clubs and organizations. The two traveled extensively going to National Square Dance Conventions all over the US. They were longtime members of the Thunderbird Squares, the Acey Deucy’s, C Sharps, and Simpsonville Pioneers. After Tom’s passing, Virginia continued to be active in the square dance community for many years. She received the Piedmont Square Dance Association Merit Award and was inducted into the SC Square Dance Association Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Coble; daughter Anne Coble; and daughter-in-law Susan Coble. One granddaughter, Jennifer Ferguson; three grandsons, Christopher Coble (Angela), Jonathan Coble (Jessie), Nickolas Coble; 5 great grandchildren, Celeste Ferguson, Cooper Coble, Molly Coble, Elena Coble, and Aria Coble.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Alan Coble; and her grandson, Paul Michael Coble.
