Susan received her undergraduate degree from American University; she then studied Radiologic Technology at George Washington University. In 1976, she moved to Greenville to teach in the Radiologic Technology program at Greenville Technical College and became the Director of the program. In 1978, Susan took the position as head of the Radiology Department at Shriners Hospital for Children. During her tenure as Director of Radiology, she was instrumental in helping to design and plan the layout for the Radiology Department at the new Shriners hospital that was being built. She retired in 2004 after 26 years of dedicated service.
Susan was a dedicated Christian and described as a loving caring person who would do anything for anyone. Susan was a member of St. Matthews UMC and the UMW, where she volunteered and attended bible studies.
Susan was an active member of the Eastern Star since 1979 and the Letter Carriers Auxiliary.
Susan met her late husband, Robert Thomas while square dancing. They both were avid Clemson football fans and enjoyed spending time with their dogs at her beach house at Oak Island.
Susan is survived by her brother, Diller B. Groff III (Katherine) of Louisville, KY, niece Pamela Groff Jones (Stephen) of Tampa, FL, Paul W. Groff (Amy) of Raleigh, NC., Step children Rick Thomas (Donna) of Greenville, S.C. and Teresa Wicks (David) of Greenville, S.C., 4 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren plus many great nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled to be held March 3, 2:00 PM at St. Matthew UMC, 701 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601, followed by a graveside committal at Woodlawn Memorial Park, which will be open to all.
