Rev. Sam Mathura

Rev. Sam Mathura, affectionately known as Brother Sam to all who knew him, was born on the small island of Trinidad, West Indies on March 29,1930. He was born to parents Ramdeen Mathura and Beatrice Lala. He was raised in the religion of Hinduisim where they served many gods. Brother Sam was given a picture of Jesus, and he did not know who He was. A neighbor told him about Jesus and young Brother Sam never forgot it.

Then, at 17 years old, he heard a street preacher talk about the LORD God Jehovah and His Son, Jesus Christ. Brother Sam was intrigued and wanted to know if this was the same Jesus that was on the picture card. He found where the preacher was staying, heard the Word, and was drawn to Christ. He instantly gave his whole heart to the Lord.

Brother Sam answered the call to ministry immediately after his salvation experience. He began preaching on the street corners in San Fernando, Trinidad. He soon married Joyce Bhagwat, who received Christ at one of his street preaching services. She too, was converted from Hinduism and for over 40 years, served by his side in ministry. They were blessed with four children and their spouses: Hannah and Russell Albert, Allan and Valerie Mathura, Ruth and Steven Whitman, Lystra and Gregg Seymour. Today we celebrate their seven grandchildren: Kash, Sacchin, Sean, Ruth, Luke, Jennifer, and Kimberly, and five great-grandchildren: Falyn, Farrah, Laiklan, London, and Nathan.

Brother Sam Mathura served as a pastor for approximately 50 years; 15 years at the Montrose New Testament Church of God in Trinidad and thirty five or more years at the Greenville Paris Church of God, and at other Churches of God in South Carolina.

After he visited the United States, he had multiple dreams encouraging him to live and minister here. He felt God’s call to leave the familiarity of Trinidad and bring his family to a new country. After he responded to this call, he stopped having the dreams.

He also served as an evangelist for almost 25 years where he preached on some of the islands in the West Indies and in many places in the United States. He met many people from God’s wonderful family and brought many more into the fold. Also, numerous people were filled with the Holy Ghost.

People were healed on many occasions because of Brother Sam’s prayer and faith. Because of the miracles manifested, he gained the reputation as “The Faith Healer.” He was a great servant of the most high God. For about 75 years, he preached the gospel and spread the great news of salvation.

We mourn the loss of our Dad and our Grandpa, as well as a generation that has gone before him who modeled discipline, self-denial, and honor. Brother Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Bhagwat Mathura and his sibings: Ramharack, Ramroop, Ekam, Dularie, and Sonia. He is survived by his brother Harold, and his two sisters Dhanmatee and Nellie, including multiple cousins, nephews, and nieces. He loved Christ first, foremost, and to the end! Well done, Brother Sam! Well done!

A visitation for Rev. Sam will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 with a funeral service to follow beginning at 12:45 PM. A burial will follow on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Greenville Memorial Gardens, 7784 Augusta Road, Piedmont, SC 29673.
