Mary Elizabeth Anderson Martin, widow of John Carlton Martin died July 19, 2023 in Charlotte, NC. She was born August 20, 1924 in Greenville, SC, to the late Mary Barksdale Anderson and Rudolf Anderson.
Mrs. Martin known as Elizabeth was educated in the Greenville, SC City Schools and at Winthrop College (University). Until the arrival of her children she worked as a secretary and was a member of the Pilot Club. Elizabeth was a charter member of John Knox Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC and was currently a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her brother Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr., the only casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. She was predeceased by her husband, John Carlton Martin in 2021; two daughters: Mary Elizabeth Martin and Catherine Ann Martin Bowen in 2008.
As her children were growing up, Elizabeth thoroughly enjoyed many trips traveling with her family. She was thrilled to ride the Concorde and the Goodyear Blimp. Another thrill was having a hummingbird come to her to be fed by hand. She adored her children and grandchildren and their guests were always welcome. She enjoyed serving as a room mother every year and as a children's Sunday school teacher.
Elizabeth will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her son, John Anderson Martin and his wife Patricia of Charlotte, NC and five grandchildren: John Anderson Martin, Jr., Matthew Carlton Martin, of Charlotte, NC, Elizabeth Carlton Bowen Foster, Mary Adger Bowen, and Rudolf Anderson Bowen of Macon, GA.
The Rev. Meg Flannagan of St. Giles Presbyterian Church will preside at graveside services to be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.
