Lillian, wife of the late Harold B. Bindseil, was born in Burkeville, Virginia on May 19, 1921. She was the daughter of Claude Vaughan Taylor and Mabel Coffey Taylor. Lillian attended Greensboro College and Business School in Greensboro, North Carolina and worked for the Internal Revenue Service before her marriage to Harold, the love of her life. Harold’s career with the Internal Revenue Service took them to Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; special detail to Mexico; and finally to Columbia, South Carolina where they lived for many years. After his retirement they traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and in the United States and were faithful members of Shandon United Methodist Church where she served as class secretary for the Wesley Fellowship Class for many years. Lillian had four brothers (Jack, Norman, Clyde, and Horsley) with Horsley, the youngest brother in Richmond, Virginia, surviving her.
Lillian and Harold had two daughters, Beverly, of Greenville, SC, who was married to Gabriel Hunter until his death in 2014 with 2 daughters, Dr. Catherine Hunter of Piedmont, SC and Elizabeth Hunter of Raleigh, NC. Catherine is married to Dr. Shane Frederick with 2 sons, Hunter and Connor and Elizabeth is married to Jeffrey Gardner with stepson Jordan Gardner, of Denver, Colorado, engaged to Kaitlin Robinson. After Gabe’s death, Beverly is now married to W. Robert Ground with stepson Brian Ground of Krakow, Poland.
Susan, of Blowing Rock, NC, who is married to Robert Hambright with 2 sons, Benjamin Hambright of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Hambright of Ft. Collins, CO and stepdaughter Steffan Kelly, of Charlotte, NC. Benjamin is married to Odette with twins, Gabriel and Adelaide, Matthew is married to Anna with 2 sons Oscar and Peter and Steffan is married to Chris Kelly with her 2 children Jack and Elizabeth. All totaled: 2 children, 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Lillian was a woman of her generation, serving as a homemaker and mom for 2 daughters, supporting her husband’s career, and doing volunteer work at school and in the local hospitals. She loved to sew and enjoyed searching for new patterns to try and fabric to buy. She made many of her daughters’ and granddaughters’ clothes which were customized to their measurements. She quilted and did needlepoint and tried other crafts. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed tending to the bountiful variety of plants in her yard. Later in life, she enjoyed shopping for antiques and old furniture which she loved to restore.
Services to celebrate Lillian’s long and rich life will be held at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609 at 10:00 am July 2, 2024 with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, SC at 7100 Garners Ferry Road 29209.
