She was born June 29, 1940, in Overton, MO, to Arvil and Ester Wooten Lawson and grew up in New Franklin, MO. She graduated from New Franklin High School and attended Bob Jones University from 1958-1962. She then served on the BJU staff as Assistant Supervisor and later Supervisor of the dining common until July, 1965.
Joyce and her husband, Dr. Bud Bierman, were married December 24, 1963. She has experienced life as a pastor’s wife when her husband pastored First Baptist Church, Westfield, NY, and as an evangelist’s wife for 45 years. She was involved as a Sunday school teacher and director of children’s and youth ministries for nearly 50 years. She wrote articles on children’s church and on the opportunities and responsibilities of a mother whose husband travels a great deal. She was a popular speaker at mother/daughter banquets, ladies meetings, and family conferences. When the Biermans returned to BJU in1972 she served in several positions on the BJU staff. Before her retirement in December, 2008, she served as Manager of University Place, an apartment complex owned by the University and, Manager of the University’s Campus View Apartments.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Taylors, SC.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband; a son, Bob Bierman, Manhattan, NY; two daughters, Krista Miller (Bobby), Greer, SC; Karin Kapoor (Ravi), Dallas, TX; two grandchildren, Conner and Mckenzie “Cookie” Miller, Greer, SC; a brother, Jerry Lawson, Fayette, MO; a sister, Linda Smith (Joe), Inman, SC; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Kim; her parents; and her three brothers, Henry, Kenneth, and Jimmy Lawson.
Visitation will be held at the Mackey Mortuary, Monday, March 20, from 6:00-8:30 PM with the funeral service Tuesday, March 21, at 2:00 pm at Faith Baptist Church, 500 W. Lee Rd., Taylors, SC .
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Joyce’s name may be made to Bob Jones University or the Faith Baptist Church Mission Fund.
