John Wendell Huggins

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dee Spence Huggins, his children, Michelle H. Krause (John) of Fayetteville, TN, Terrie H. Walker (Bill) of Anderson, SC, Wendell Allen Huggins (Lealyn) of Townville, SC, and Cean H. Irvin (Mike) of Townville, SC, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Branford Allen Huggins, and Ethel Fowler Huggins of Marion, SC , and his brother, Fritz Watson Huggins of Marion, SC. He has one sister, Wilmarie H. Boatwright residing in Conway, SC.

Wendell was born in Gallivants Ferry, SC on January 27, 1932. His family later moved to Marion, SC where Wendell grew up on the family tobacco and cotton farms. He attended Carlisle Military Academy, which led to his serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War, and serving 8 years in the reserves. While stationed in Everett, Washington, Wendell met Dee and they married in 1952. They returned to Marion, SC and Wendell went to work with his family on the farms. But due to health reasons, he had to quit farming.

Wendell moved his family to Greenville, South Carolina in 1962, and went to work for Liberty Life Insurance Company, where he retired after 33 years. He was a member of Eastlan Baptist Church, served as treasurer of the church, ushered, and faithfully served for many, many years as a deacon. He was also a Mason.

Wendell loved to hunt quail and dove, which led to annual suppers at the family club house in Marion for family, friends, law enforcement, and clergy. He raised and trained his own bird dogs, and always had a faithful dog by his side until the last years of his life.

With a passion for cooking, Wendell supplied friends, families, shut-ins, the sick, church members, just about anybody he met with pies, cakes, casseroles, or dinners. Even though he lived in a subdivision in Greenville, he had a huge garden in his back yard, where He grew tomatoes, okra, beans, corn, squash, bell peppers, cucumbers, and much more, and gladly shared his crops with family, neighbors and friends.

Wendell loved his wife, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his church family, his friends, and people he met. But most importantly, he loved Jesus Christ, Our Lord And Savior. His family will miss him tremendously, but have faith and comfort knowing that we will be united with him once again in Heaven.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 19, 2015 from 1:00 -2:30pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home with a Memorial service to follow at 2:30pm in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made St. Jude Children's Hospital or Homestead Hospice, or Eastlan Baptist Church. www.woodlawn-fh.com
