Joe Marshall Barron, 64, of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2016.
Born in Anderson, South Carolina, Joe grew up in Athens, Georgia, where his parents, Charles Edward and Lalla Farmer Barron still reside.
Joe graduated with highest honors from the last graduating class at Athens High School in 1970 and from Clemson University in 1974. He then went on to obtain a Masters of Engineering from Clemson in 1977. After spending some time living and working in Georgetown and Columbia, Joe settled in Greenville in 1984 where he served the community well. He was a devoted and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher.
He was a founding and active member of Habitat for Humanity of Greenville, which has built over 330 homes in the area. Joe was also a proud Troop 11 Boy Scout and Sea Scout Leader, where he inspired numerous lives and impacted many for Christ.
He was honored for his service by carrying the torch for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. In 2011, Joe celebrated 50 years of scouting. He also worked for The SC State Parks Department, The Fletcher Group, and most recently, H2L Consulting Engineers as a civil engineer. Joe loved camping, sailing, painting, story-telling, and most of all, sharing his life with others, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rebecca “Becky” Robertson Barron; his son, Marshall Robertson Barron and wife Liza of Greenville; his daughter, Jane Barron Hanisch and husband, David of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Ruth Barron Long and husband Will of Nashville, TN; his brother, Charles Edward Barron, Jr, and wife Leslie of Athens, GA; and his grandchildren, Marshall “Davis” Barron and Elizabeth “Libby” Barron of Greenville.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive in Greenville, from 6 – 8 pm.
The funeral service will be Friday, February 12 at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greenville at 1 pm.
A private burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, 200 W. Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601; Habitat for Humanity of Greenville, 49 Greenland Drive, Greenville, SC 29615; or Troop 11 Boy Scouts, c/o First Presbyterian Church Greenville.
