Born in Greenville, South Carolina May 15, 1924, James was the son of the late Eula Eugene Jeter and Ruth Marie McCain.
Above all, throughout his life, James expressed a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. He was a devoted member of Northgate Baptist Church, served as a Deacon, and was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class.
He was a Shriner, a York Rite Mason and served as Worshipful Master of Recovery Lodge No. 31 and Past Presiding Officer of the Three Bodies of York Rite Masonry of the Carolina Conclave.
During World War II, James served in Europe with General Patton’s Third Army, and was awarded five battle stars and one other citation.
James was married to Georgia Anna Williams Roper for over 60 years. Georgia died on her birthday, January 19, 2003. He is survived by one son, James Claude Jeter, Junior. James has three grandsons, Scott Jordan Jeter, Gregory Huntington Jeter, James Bradley Jeter; seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends Krissten Davenger and Sherri Marie Mullen.
On February 26, 2006 Dr. Bob Whaley officiated at the wedding of James to Betty Louise Archer Gilliam at Northgate Baptist Church. They were happily married for seven years. Betty died August 11, 2013. Betty and James were committed Christians and faithful members of Northgate Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at 1:30 pm. on Monday, July 30th at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the funeral service for James at 2:30 pm. with Dr. Barry Jimmerson officiating. Graveside services will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Wade Hampton Boulevard, Greenville, South Carolina.
