James Osborne Vaughn, 94 of N. Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on Friday, April 15, 2011. Born in Newberry, SC. He was the son of the late James Thomas and Mary Maude Davis Vaughn. Jake "as he was called" attended Newberry High School, Carlisle School and Newberry College, where he played football. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. He was a charter member of Saint Matthews Methodist Church in Greenville. Jake spent his life working in law enforcement. He joined the Greenville Police Department in 1942 and worked there for over 20 years. He also worked with the Greenvile County Sheriff's Department, Public Defender's Office and he retired from the 13th Circuit Solicitor's Office in 1979. Jake took an early retirement so that he could take care of his beloved wife, Pee Wee when she became sick with Alzheimer's. He looked after her every day for 21 years until she passed away. Jake was a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple where he formed and served as captain of the Scooter Unit from 1960-1965. Jake is survived by a son: Jimmy Vaughn (Martha) of Hampstead, NC; two daughters: Carolyn Taylor (Drew) of N. Myrtle Beach, SC and Mary Buckner (Charlie) of Taylors, SC; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife: Marquerite Blease Vaughn and a grandson: Vaughn Taylor. The family would like to thank Magnolia Assisted Living Home at Myrtle Beach, SC for their loving care and compassion to their father. Also, we would like to thank all of his friends at N. Myrtle Beach and from Greenville that kept in touch with him through the years. We especially would like to thank his very best friend, Bobby Gregory who called Jake every Sunday night for 32 years. Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home with visitation prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:30 pm in the funeral home.
