Herbert Thomas Streu

Herbert Thomas Streu of Greenville, SC, was born in 1927 in Elizabeth, NJ and passed away on January 16, 2021, a victim of COVID-19. He was the son of the late Herbert William and Zita Ruth Streu. A graduate of Cranford High School, Cranford, NJ, he attended Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ where he earned his BS in Horticulture and MS and PhD degrees in Entomology. Dr. Streu was Research Professor Emeritus in the Department of Entomology at Rutgers, where he served as Department Chairman and Director of the Graduate Program until his retirement in 1988.

Dr. Streu was a 60 plus year member of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) where he was elected Honorary Member in 1988. He served the Eastern Branch of the ESA as Secretary-Treasurer for eleven years, and was elected President for the Branch's 50th Anniversary Meetings. In 1982 he was elected Branch Representative to the ESA Governing Board, where he also served on the Executive Committee. During his active membership he served on or chaired more than 20 ESA committees. In 1991, the Eastern Branch of the ESA recognized his dedication and service to his Professional Society by creating the Herbert T. Streu Meritorious Service Award, which has since been presented to dedicated Branch members elected to the Award. The Fiftieth Anniversary History of The Eastern Branch, published by the ESA, was dedicated to Dr. Streu as further recognition of his long service to the Branch.

Dr. Streu was an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as a 50 year Life Member and recently an appointed member of the Presidents Circle.

In 1991 Professor Streu was awarded the Rutgers University Presidential Citation for his many contributions and service to the University. He served as a Senator in the Rutgers University Senate and was elected as the Faculty Representative to The Rutgers University Board of Governors, following one term as Faculty Representative on the Board of Trustees.

During his career he was an Associate Editor for the Journal of the New York Entomological Society, was a Contributing Editor to both the American Lawn Applicator and the Greenhouse Manager magazines.

He also served his profession as a reviewer for scientific journals as well as a member of External Review Teams of University and USDA Entomology Research Programs. He published scientific papers and articles in the fields of entomology, nematology and acarology, and served as editor of the Proceedings of a number of professional meetings.

He presented hundreds of seminars and papers on his research on insect and mite biology and control, throughout the United States and Canada, to various professional grower groups as well as to University

Departments of Biology and Entomology. As Guest Lecturer, he taught for several years at The DuPage Horticultural School in Chicago, as well as at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens in NY City. He was a consultant to agricultural industry, commercial horticultural, turf grass and floricultural companies, and interior plantscaping firms. He served until his retirement as a permanent member on the USDA, IR-4 Advisory Committee on Ornamental Crops. As part of Rutgers Outreach programs, he taught pest management courses to golf course superintendents, turf grass and nursery managers, and commercial greenhouse managers.

At the University, Professor Streu taught Undergraduate and Graduate Entomology courses and Graduate Seminars, and was an undergraduate Freshman Advisor and a George H. Cook Honors Scholars Research Project advisor. As a major Professor and Director of the Graduate Program, he mentored and guided Graduate Students towards the MS and PhD degrees and chaired, or served as a member of, numerous Biology and Entomology programs MS and PhD Examining Committees. Martha Emery Streu, his wife of 40 years, preceded him in death in 2015.
