He served in the Navy during World War II, where he participated in the campaign to transport soldiers and supplies to Normandy Beach. He was stationed in San Diego, Washington DC, Casablanca and Shanghai and served on the USS Orvetta and the USS Bauxite in the Pacific. He was proud of his service to his country.
While on leave in New York in 1943, Hal and a shipmate went to a USO dance, where Hal met the love of his life, Dorothy. He and Dotty corresponded for two years while he was abroad and when he returned to New York on VJ Day, he immediately proposed. Hal instilled in his children a strong work ethic, and worked a variety of jobs to support his family. He retired from Metropolitan Life after 21 years.
After Dotty's death in 1977, Hal married Hope Moreno. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling and rekindled his interest in art. He began drawing and painting, working with acrylics, colored pencils, pastels and watercolors. When Hope developed Alzheimer's, Hal cared for her until her death in 2011.
Hal showed his artwork in juried art shows and won several awards. He began organizing art shows to sell his paintings and donated proceeds to support the Alzheimer's Association, Meals on Wheels, homeless veterans and other local organizations. Although his eyesight was failing, Hal continued to draw and paint and contribute to his community.
Hal was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, and his son Hal. He leaves behind his daughters Elaine Ekberg and Janine Way (Michael), sons Michael (Lois) and Todd (Maryann), eleven grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.
Hal very much loved and was proud of his family. "Look what we started", he said about the legacy he and Dotty began all those years ago. We will miss him.
A memorial service for Hal will be conducted in New York at a later date.
Hal's memory can be honored by making a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or a local charity of your choice.
