She was born on June 30, 1929, in Spartanburg, SC to the late Rama H and Ida Belle King. She was predeceased by her husband Davis Furman Carpenter, father of Jo Catherine Carpenter, Margurite C. Hovious, formerly married to Mike Hovious, Rebecca C. Hanling, formerly married to Scott Hanling, and Jack Waters, son of Marion Waters. She is survived by Carolyn Waters Sorenson, her husband Cameron, and their sons Marshall and Coleman.
Bette graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC in 1949 and attended graduate school at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC and Columbia University in New York, NY.
Her memberships have been Wildwood and Greenville Garden Clubs, Greenville Women Giving, Greenville Music Club, and National, State, and local Medical Alliances.
