William Brett Herring was born 6/8/1989 in Greensboro, N.C. and passed away 10/1/2022, in Los Angeles, CA, after a thirteen year struggle with addiction and mental illness. Brett was a caring person, with a contagious laugh and a sharp wit. Brett loved the outdoors and his happiest times were those spent camping, hiking, and skateboarding. In 2007 he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and belonged to Troop 109. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and active in his youth groups throughout his teens. Brett had many interests and was a talented piano player and painter. During high school he played lacrosse and wrestled. He later became passionate about weight-lifting and yoga. Brett graduated from Greensboro Day School in 2007, and attended N.C.State University for a brief time. He is survived by his mother, Julia E. Smith , aunts, Dr. Jenny G. Smith and Myra H. Brown ( James "Bugsy"), uncle, Ron G. Smith, cousin, Joseph Mason Smoller, his father Stephen Smoller, and many close friends and extended family. He is preceded in death by his father and brother, David and Patrick Herring, step-father, Nicholas (Andy) Oglesby and grandparents, Dr.and Mrs. William B. Herring, and Mr. and Mrs. William L. Smith. His memorial service will be held at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm St., Saturday, Nov.12 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
