Julian-William Carl Costner Sr. passed away on February 21, 2014 at Moses Cone Hospital. He is now reunited with his wife of sixty-two years, Levada Johnson Costner and his son William Carl Costner Jr. A graveside service will be held Monday, February 24, at 2 PM at Westminster Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 PM at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel.
“Bill” as he was called by all who knew him was born and raised in Greensboro, the son of the late Dock C. and Mary Harrell Costner Sr. He was a Gunner’s Mate in the US Navy during World War II and served in the American-European and Pacific-Asiatic Theatres. After being honorably discharged in November, 1945, Bill entered the elevator industry as a construction helper. After many years as an elevator mechanic, adjuster and maintenance man he accepted an elective office to become the first full-time Business Representative and Financial Secretary and Treasurer of Local No. 80 of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. After serving these positions for two terms, Bill resigned and took a position with the NC Department of Labor as an elevator inspector and retired in 1988. He was a 32 degree Mason of Revolution Lodge No. 552 and was a Shriner of the Oasis Temple for many years. He will be remembered by his family as a hardworking, straight forward and loving man.
He is survived by his children, Donald Wayne Costner and Mary Ruth Costner Turner; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
