Sharon Jean Popek, a much loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, has passed away at the age of 87. Sharon was born on November 9, 1936, and lived a life full of family, learning, teaching and community involvement.
Sharon was predeceased by her devoted husband, Thomas Popek. She is survived by her children, Susan, Sandra, and Timothy (Anne); her grandchildren, Jordan (Abhi), Grace, Thomas, and Joseph, her great-grandchild, Kira, as well as cousins, sibling-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Sharon cherished her family and took immense pride in their achievements and joys.
Sharon was an award winning baton twirler at Eastern Michigan University where she obtained a degree in English along with an early elementary teaching certificate followed by a Master’s degree in childhood development. She was a beloved first grade teacher for 28 years. After retirement, she moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where she resided for 26 years.
Sharon had a vibrant social life and many leisure interests including a deep love of reading, especially mystery novels, golfing, shopping, social groups, her condo at Atlantic Beach, and her affection for dogs, particularly Irish Setters. She was actively involved in various community activities in Wayne, Michigan, where she spent many years on the Parks and Recreation Board, The Fall Festival Committee, and as a member of the Professional Women’s Organization. Many enjoyed reading her column “It’s Great to Live in Wayne” in the Eagle and watching her on the local cable station. In Greensboro, she was a member and eventual President of the Newcomers Club.
Sharon’s legacy lives on through her family and she will be missed.
