Mark Alan Toole, beloved child of Patricia and Gary Toole, entered the world on December 18, 1970, at Tachikawa Air Base in Japan. His sister and best friend, Sara, joined the scene four years later to complete the tight-knit and loving Toole family.
Mark was proud of his Chicago roots and was a lifelong Bears fan, a gift (or curse) he passed along to his daughters. He was a graduate of DePauw University, Chicago Theological Seminary, and the University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology where he earned his BA, MDiv, and Ph.D. (respectively). His final wish was for you to read his dissertation from start to finish. (We joke but, just in case, you can find it here.)https://digitalcommons.du.edu/etd/654
At his core, Mark was a teacher and storyteller. He shared his love of learning and remarkable gifts in classrooms at High Point University, at colleges across Colorado, in North Carolina’s finest church basements, and while leading student trips to the Middle East, Japan, England, India, and Thailand. Favorite memories include travels with his parents and sister (which Mark believed could be turned into a best-selling book called “Looking for Lunch, Driving for Dinner”), floating in the Dead Sea, celebrating the start of Y2K with DePauw friends, climbing numerous 14ers in Colorado, finishing two marathons, traveling with his young daughters throughout Japan, making music as a member of The ToadFrogs, raising hell with his Lindley Park neighbors, hanging out with HPU colleagues, and too many others to recount.
Mark’s daughters were the absolute light of his life and his reason for being. He was a stay-at-home Dad while earning his doctorate, and the girls (now young women) benefitted from his constant attention, his patience when answering a million “why?” questions, and his ability to make anything fun. Later, he would serve as coach, confidante, and friend to them. He was the master of kitchen dance parties, and made every single day an adventure.
Mark is survived by daughters Maura and Kara Toole of Greensboro, NC; parents, Patricia and Gary Toole of Evergreen, CO; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Kevin Miller of Conifer, CO; nephews Alex and Ben Miller; and numerous friends, colleagues, and former students who span the globe.
Mark’s remarkable life was cut short by alcoholic cirrhosis, a disease that leaves his family and friends wondering “what if?” Mark, with his crooked smile and sparkling green eyes, would tell us that this is an utter waste of our precious time and energy. He would want all of us to know that he is at peace and that he wishes peace for all of us, too.
To honor his life, please share a memory of your time with Mark. If you are so inclined, we invite you to make a donation to the Guilford Education Alliance or the Piedmont Land Conservancy.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at College Park Church, 1601 Walker Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.haneslineberryfhnorthelm.com for the Toole family.
