I am so sorry to everyone who loved who we knew as Mrs. Cotten, my English teacher, at Reidsville High School,  class of 1971.  Everyone was fond of her and I enjoyed her light joyful sense around learning and school that was contagious.  My own love of English, reading, writing, and drama were encouraged and inspired by her.  She will surely be missed in her communities of Reidsville and Greensboro.  

I am so sorry to learn of her passing. My english teacher. She had a great impact and positive influence in ways, I can't begin to describe.

I first met Marilyn in the year 2000 as she was organizing a trip to Australia and New Zealand for the next summer.  I quickly learned what a passionate person she was regarding travel, as well as many other topics.  Over the next few years, I took two more trips with her, including one that lasted from mid-June to early August across the United States.  I will never forget that "suitcase summer."  I will forever be grateful to her for broadening my horizons regarding travel and how wonderful it is to be able to visit different places.  My thoughts and prayers are with Fred, Karen, and the entire family.

I was one of the many students taught and influenced by Mrs. Cotten.  She was a magnificent teacher and an example to all of her students. She was one of the reasons I majored in English in college and love all types of literature. My sympathies and prayers to Fred, Karen and the entire family.

Mrs. Cotten was like a second Mother to me, and during my high school years I spent as much time at the Cotten household as I did my own.  She inspired me in her classes, and gave me steady encouragement throughout the years that followed !!  My heart goes out to Fred and Karen, as I grieve the loss of someone so dear!!

I had the honor of doing Marilyn's hair and nails for about 25 years. Over this time period we got to know each other very well. We shared alot of tears..stories..and laughter. She was so proud of her family and talked of them often.
I got to be involved with hearing all about meeting the love of her life at a late age. She loved my son Brad Marley and encouraged him in his music career of songwriting. He would often stop by and sing a song for her. She will be missed but I know I will see her again.

I haven't seen Fred in many years, but we've been friends for a long time. I only met Mrs. Cotten-McMichael a couple of times and remember her as a gracious woman. 

I send condolences and love to her family and friends. 

Mrs. Cotton was one of my favorite teachers at Reidsville Senior High! A delightful lady who had the uncanny ability to engage and challenge her students to excellence. Her memory makes me smile. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. McMichael's passing.  She was hands down my very  favorite teacher. I looked forward to her class everyday. She inspired and brought out the best in me and my classmates . I don't have the words to adequately express the respect and admiration I had and have for her to this day. She was a great teacher and lovely person. I will always consider myself lucky to have known her.    ~Reidsville High Class of '75~

I am deeply saddened to learn of Mrs. Cotten-McMichael's death. I attended UNC-Greensboro with her son Fred. A mutual friend lost his mother during that time, and I remember Fred being a stalwart of strength for him during his mother's illness and death. Since then, I too have lost my mother, so I understand the pain you feel. I wish for all a peace that brings the strength and understanding to sustain you as you move through the difficult days ahead.

It has been 44 years since I last saw her but her passion for books ignited in me a passion that still remains. I just wanted you to know that she made a difference in my life.

I had Mrs. Cotton for 20th Century Novels.  She was one of my favorite teachers! She will truly be missed.

Ms Cotton was my English teacher for 2yrs.....normally a subject l was NOT fond of until she introduced me to Shakespeare and MacBeth in English Lit.  My final exam was reciting the Soliloquy. I dedicate my LOVE of literature, especially the Classics to YOU Ms. Cotton. Thank you for sharing you gift with a bunch of 1980s teenagers.
