Lee Lucas Jones, 72, passed away on February 13th, 2024, at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. Born to John Simpson Lucas and Ida Lee Hollingsworth Lucas of Greensboro, North Carolina, Lee leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family and causes she held dear. She fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s that lasted 16 years as dated from her earliest symptoms.
A dedicated wife and mother, Lee held a pivotal role in the lives of her three children, navigating the trials of relocation across the states of North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida with remarkable grace and resilience in support of her husband's career. She shared 45 wonderful years of marriage with Freeman Randolph Jones Jr. and was the cherished grandmother of two grandchildren. Lee was known for her warmth, joyful spirit, and an ever-optimistic can-do attitude that touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her.
Starting her career after her freshman year in college, Lee moved to Washington , DC and went to work as a retail sales clerk for Garfinckel’s Department Store, at that time one of the prominent department stores in Washington. She worked her way up to become the youngest ever cosmetics buyer at the store. She later worked for Lucas Travel Agency in both Greensboro and Charlotte and co-owned a ladies’ clothing business in Greensboro with her sister, Becky Lucas Healy.
Lee found joy in positively impacting the lives of women. A true fashion enthusiast, she used her role as a buyer, business owner, and stylist, to empower women to feel confident through clothing. Her commitment to women's rights extended beyond the fashion world, as she dedicated herself to volunteering for the women's crisis line when living in Charlotte.
Known for her warm hospitality, prior to her Alzheimer’s, Lee was a gracious hostess for gatherings and parties of all types that created cherished memories for family and friends alike. She had a love for sports and her interests ranged from basketball and football to professional bull riding. Lee also loved ballet, musical theatre, and beach music. These are all interests that she imparted to her children.
She is survived by her husband, Freeman Randolph Jones Jr, her three children, Freeman Randolph Jones III, John Simpson Lucas Jones, and Lee Hollingsworth Fink, as well as two grandchildren.
