She was born on November 17, 1915 in Peachland, NC to Richard Reuben and Etta Magnolia Little Davis. She grew up on a cotton farm that was so self-sustaining that her family only bought coffee and salt went they “went to town”. Josie was valedictorian of her high school and won a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University, as she aspired to be a nurse, but had to use the scholarship money to have an operation on her feet. Although she left home and came to Greensboro at age 19 to work, she was always a country girl at heart. She worked at Mojud Hosiery and later at Blue Bell, which became VF Corporation, retiring after working over 50 years of her life.
Raised in the Methodist faith, she remained true to her Christian upbringing and attended church all her life, encouraging her four children to do the same. She was a very spiritual, strong minded, independent woman, and loved writing letters to the editor of the local newspaper about her political concerns.
She turned 100 last year and had a wonderful time celebrating with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other family and friends who traveled from five states.
Josie was a loving, caring, strong, intelligent woman dearly loved by her family and friends. She stayed at home until she was 95 then resided at Ashton Place Heath and Rehab, where she made many friends who mourn her passing. The family wishes to thank the staff at Ashton, as she was blessed for the loving and tender care she received. Our thanks also extends to Hospice of Greensboro for the comforting support they tendered our family.
Married to William McClain for 36 years, she raised four children who survive her, William McClain, Jr., Thomas McClain, Stephen McClain, and Jeanne McClain; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves her treasured canine companion, her daschund, Ginger.
The family will receive friends beginning at 11 AM on Saturday, September 10 at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory chapel. A service to celebrate her life will be at 1 PM with Dr. Marcus Putnam officiating followed by interment at Lakeview Memorial Park.
