John was born and raised in Jacksonville. He graduated high school from The Bolles School. He completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University, and this is where he met and later married his sweetheart, Dorothy Dean. John completed his medical education at Emory Medical School in Atlanta, GA. In 1955, John started his medical internship at Duval Medical Center for 1 year and then served in the US Air Force in California for 2 years. After his service, the Mitchells and their young family returned home to Jacksonville where he completed his medical residency and was Senior Resident of General Surgery 1961-1962. He opened his practice in General and Traumatic Surgery. Dr. Mitchell ultimately joined his father, Dr. John Henry Mitchell at the Mitchell Clinic in Downtown Jacksonville, practicing industrial medicine. He spent his career helping many workers recover from injuries on their job as well as helping them to prevent injury.
He was a gifted photographer and enjoyed playing golf with a close group of lifelong friends. He also enjoyed time spent at the beach and travel to various parts of the world. In his retired years, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Henry Mitchell and Blanche Dickey Mitchell, as well as his brother, Dickey Mitchell, and sister, Elizabeth Whyte. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy, who resides in Greensboro. Additional close relatives are their children: Catherine Weeks (Kris) and Dr. Dean Mitchell (Christie); 5 grandchildren: Captain Collin Weeks (Clare), Ashlynn Weeks, Lauren Weeks, Adam Mitchell (Allison) and Matt Mitchell (Joanna); and 2 great-grandchildren: Ellie Weeks and Abby Weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ortega United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, FL – or – Well Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro, NC.
