Jim and I were traveling companions to Europe 30+ years ago.   Although he wasn’t feeling his best he never complained and was a great dinner companion.  He was the backbone of the Greensboro singles community and introduced me to his many friends.  We had fun playing volleyball in his yard, enjoying his pool and hot tub and his great laugh—-I can still hear it   Fond memories of Jim at his Myrtle Beach house with huge weekend parties there.  Such a generous light in the world—Jim.  Thank you for being the best of friends to me and so many.

Jim was a good man. He was a great friend for many years. We will miss him, his light, his generosity and his smile.  Love Susan Thorpe Thierens and Ann Kraft.

Mr. Dutton was my landlord and several of my fellow UNCG friends.  He was a kind man. My heart and thoughts go out to all those he left behind.  Great memories:). 

I am a tenant and friend of Jim's. He was a man of high moral character and took really good care of me and my loved ones. He was quick to help me with anything that I needed and radiated a lot of love into the world.  He set me up for success and I will always be grateful.

I was a tenant of Jim and his parents as a UNCG student back in the day. Always very pleasant and quick to respond to any issues with the apartment, which were very few. It's nice to learn only now of his generous contributions to the school and wide influence on the community.  Godspeed.

It was a great pleasure to meet you through my sister Cristina Rolo, whose husband and two children also had the privilege to relate and spend time with you, and who always spoke of you as a good friend.
From you, I kept your serene and friendly demeanor, and I have always present the good moments spent with you at the lake, at the Myrtle beach house, in Castelo Branco, and Lisbon (Portugal) when you stayed at our house. These were days lived with much happiness, shared with you and my family. 
I will be eternally grateful for the wonderful experiences, and moments we shared.
I have very present my first water skiing experience with “Captain Jim” with funny falls, which made me laugh a lot.
Last time I saw you presencially and gave you a hug, Jim, was here in Portugal, when you spent Christmas with our family for the second time. We will forever keep you in our heart. 
Your beautiful white hair was an indicator of your many experiences in life... 
We show you our gratitude, and we wish that in the place that you are currently we will continue to have your friendship and your support. You have ours!

We miss you, Jim!
We will treasure all the great moments we had with you: UNCG classes, tennis, volleyball, water skying, kneeboarding, birthdays, thanksgivings, christmas, halloween trick or treat & decorations with the kids, driving, Myrtle beach, lake with Captain Jim, … 

We remember the time spent with you at your house, de kids always felt at home. And the time spent at the lake, with the boat, and Seedoo. And the Christmas you spent with us in Lisbon  and in Castelo Branco, Portugal. 
Late night volleyball with our NC friends at your house was always a treat. Playing tennis with you in doubles at the “rackets for the cure” tournament. 
We always loved to put a smile on your face and it was a joy to have you as a friend. Thank you Jim. 🙏
So many memories… We will remember them all and cherish them for as long as we live.

Jim was the sweetest landlord. He walked me through getting my first place and was so helpful the whole way through. Prayers to his family ❤️

Jim was a good man.  Always welcoming, friendly, and anxious to share his good fortune which resulted from his hard work and business smarts.   He will be missed.  My condolences to the family.  

My first memory of Jim, so many years ago, was when he poured a beer over my head and my date avenged my "honor".  The next memories were so much fun - at the beach house for volley ball, Christmas parties, and other parties.  A very memorable party was when he had no heat and we all had a super time anyway.  Jim was such a pleasure to get to know, so very welcoming.  I met so many dear people through you.  May your memory be for a blessing to all who shared this journey with you. RIP my friend

I often think of Jim and wonder what he is up to. I'm sad to hear of his passing. He was a great joy to my life as he and his friends welcomed me to his home and many variety of volleyball and lake visits. 
I wish we had all stayed in touch, and that I had seen him recently. I will miss him and still enjoy the memories. Thank you for welcoming me so many years ago Jim. I hope you are having a great time now and know we will all miss you!

Jim Dutton was a kind and gentle soul, a true gentleman and friend to many.  He was generous, from Volleyball games to his beloved Christmas Parties - he opened his home and heart to so many.   He was always ready with his genuine smile and a good chuckle.   Heaven has gained an angel.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Jim through his beach trip and Christmas parties.  We always had so much fun and because of Jim I made lots of wonderful friends. He will be missed but always remembered!  Watch over the rest of us.







Jim was a friend to many, and shared his life and opened his home for others to gather. He’s been in my thoughts many times over the past years, not being in Gbo to visit, wishing the best for him. He will be sorely missed.

My condolences. It was a pleasure to know Jim. He was a good friend to more people than just about anyone I have ever known.  Denise and I have a special memory of Jim at the lake this past Fourth of July. I interacted with Jim through work and he was always a gentleman, honest and always a straight shooter. You could always count on him.   

My memory of Jim comes from his Christmas parties. I remember making a special ornament for his Christmas tree.  My husband Fran who recently passed always enjoyed going and sharing the season with Jim.  He was a gentle soul and will be missed. I know Fran welcomed into heaven. Love and prayers for his family.
