George Gilchrist Brown

George G. Brown of Jamestown, N.C. died suddenly in his home on November 26, 2022. He was 80 years old and born in Charlotte, N.C. on March 13, 1942 to the late John Albert Brown and Hattie Ruth Collins Brown. He was an Army veteranwith a successful career as a radio broadcaster at stations in N.C. and T.N. Later in his career, he leveraged his technical, creative,and writing skills in his own digital typesetting business, Criterion Imagesetters, as well as working for DPSI in Greensboro, N.C., Capitol Fasteners of High Point, N.C. and eventually Office Depot before retiring. He founded the non-profit, North Carolina Citizens for Felony Murder Rule Change (NCCFMRC), where he worked tirelessly for years to change outdated laws resulting in unjust sentencing.

George was respected for his quick and curious mind and loved by many for his sharp sense of humor, deep perspectives on life, and a caring heart. Many neighbors and lifelong friends will miss his wry smile and radio announcer voice that was quick to tell a story or share an opinion about topics of importance. His expressive way of seeing the world was best captured in his photography and clever missives to friends and family. A letter from George was rarely brief and always heartfelt.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark, and brother, John William Brown. He leaves behind his sister-in-law, LaVerne Karsten Brown, nieces Katherine Brown Sharpe (Jeff) and Elizabeth Brown D’Herde and their families. His ex-wife, Donna Katz, was a loving friend to George throughout his lifetime.
