Predeceased by his father, Frederick Herbert Steck, Sr., and his mother, Eugenia Riddick Steck, he is survived by his wife, Vicki Wells Steck; four children, Musette Steger (Mark) of Phoenix, Lillian Smith (Doug) of Atlanta, Frederick Steck III (Wendy) of Atlanta, and Marietta Murphy (Jay) of Charlotte; their mother, Musette D. Steck of Southport; his eleven grandchildren, Musette Steger, Will Smith, Jack Smith, Sam Smith, Luke Smith, Julia Steck, Lily Steck, Sophie Steck, Dunn Murphy, Daven Murphy and Alston Murphy; his sister, Anna Kirwan Carey (Gibby) of Cincinnati; his sister-in-law Barbie Doyle (Ron) of Nashville; special niece Keri Perry (Jim) and nephew Ryan Doyle (Lindsey) of Nashville; and numerous other precious nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Steck is best remembered for his kind gentle spirit, quick wit, humble demeanor, his deep and abiding love for his children and grandchildren, his commitment to serve his community and his church, travelling with Vicki and supporting his beloved Tar Heels.
Mr. Steck was a long-time member of West Market Street United Methodist Church where he served thirty years as usher (ten years as Usher Captain), eleven years on the Board of Administration, and three years as a Trustee. Prior to joining WMSUMC, he was a Charter Member of Irving Park United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board for three years.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on July 1, 1937, Mr. Steck attended The Gilman School and later graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA degree in history. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and spent two years in the Naval ROTC. Upon graduation he served in the US Navy as Assistant Curator in the Department of Naval History in Washington, DC. He then joined Wachovia Bank. He left Wachovia to work for Foil Yarn Company, and later formed Lyon, Schenck, Steck Associates, which eventually became Pembroke Textiles. When he retired in 2007 he was Senior Partner and was twice named Textile Supplier of the Year by the Carolina Hosiery Association. In total he spent 43 years in textile sales.
He was proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Greensboro where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Board of Directors since 2013. He recently celebrated ten years of perfect attendance. His favorite activities were coordinating Project Rebuild for several years, attending district conferences, ringing the Salvation Army Bell at Christmas and serving as a volunteer at the Wyndham Classic. Other past civic commitments included the Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement and Habitat for Humanity.
Steck also was with the US Naval Reserves where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. One of the proudest moments in his life was when he was asked one beautiful autumn afternoon several years ago to assist in striking the colors while visiting the American Cemetery in Normandy, France.
A long-time member of the Greensboro Country Club, Mr. Steck was an avid golfer and tennis player, and he enjoyed a 30-year relationship with his poker club. He was devoted to his wife, Vicki. On February 4, 2015 surrounded by family in his room at Wesley Long they were able to renew the marriage vows they had made over twenty years ago.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary of West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends in The Gathering Space at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be sent to Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 West Lee Street, or West Market Street United Methodist Church.
