Juanita was born in Memphis, TN to Joeseph and Hazel Garrett in 1929. Her family, including older sister, Lometa, relocated to Ft. Worth, TX. Juanita met her first husband, Jim Miller, in high school. After graduating and after his service in the Navy, Jim and Juanita married and raised their family in Fort Worth, Texas.
Juanita’s early employment was with Southern Bell Telephone Company as a utility drafter and later, was employed to provide drafting services for oil companies in Fort Worth. In 1973, Jim and Juanita moved to NC when Jim took a position with Hatteras Yachts in High Point, NC.
Juanita and Jim quickly joined a local church in Jamestown, where she was Director of the Building Committee, sang in the choir and served in the church’s Early Education Center for children.
Juanita loved to sew and design clothes. She loved to delight her daughter with the latest fashions during her high school years and continued creating clothes for her granddaughter. It was only natural that she offered her talents to local women by designing wedding and bridesmaid dresses.
Juanita painted North Carolina landscapes during her spare time.
Later in life, she met and married Gerry Holcombe and joined Gate City Baptist Church where both had an active church life.
Juanita is preceded in death by her beloved mother and father, Hazel (Meme) and Joe Garrett; sister, Lometa White of Ft. Worth, TX. She is survived by her daughter, Diane McKinzie; son, Dana Miller and wife, Martha; two grandchildren, Tucker McKinzie and Melissa Miller Garstka; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., in Greensboro, NC.
