A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 26, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1900 W Market Street, Greensboro. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 1:00 until 1:45 pm at the church. A graveside service will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Evelyn was born on May 7, 1925, in Boonville, North Carolina (Yadkin County), to the late Beulah Bonson Spencer and Maude Miller Spencer.
Evelyn graduated from Women’s College (UNC-Greensboro) where she studied home economics. She worked as a sportswear buyer for Ellis Stone department store in Greensboro. While working as a public school cafeteria manager in Richmond, VA, she met Claude Allen Smith and they were married at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Boonville on December 26, 1953. They lived in Richmond, Waynesboro, and Charlottesville, VA, before settling in Greensboro.
Evelyn taught special education at Sumner School and home economics at Southern Guilford High School. She was a talented seamstress who also enjoyed canning pickles and jam made from home-grown vegetables and fruit. She worked with Claude on home improvement projects. She did many things to stay healthy including eating well and exercising. She traveled to Europe, Israel, Alaska, Maui, the Outer Banks, and to Florida to visit daughter Cheryl and husband Mark.
Evelyn was a woman of strong faith in Jesus as her personal savior. She was an active member of First Christian Church, serving in many leadership roles, and was an Elder Emeritus. She participated in Church Women United and Bible Study Fellowship. She was a Proverbs 31 woman.
She was a sweet person and a good listener who loved people. She faithfully visited church members and family at nursing homes. She drove people to church who needed a ride. She lovingly cared for her grandchildren and delighted in being with them and making things for them.
She was preceded in death by her husband Claude, her sister Edith Spencer York, and brothers Gilbert Spencer, Milford Spencer, and Bernard Spencer.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Spencer Smith and wife Ellen of Greensboro, NC; daughter Cheryl Shay and husband Mark of Tierra Verde, FL; four granddaughters, Leah Smith of Chapel Hill, Hannah Smith of Charlotte, Rebecca Smith of Carrboro, and Sarah Smith of Greensboro, along with many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Outreach Ministry Team of First Christian Church.
