Eugenia Lee Hickerson MacRae

Eugenia was born June 29, 1937 in Sparta, NC to the late Marie and Robert Hickerson. She moved to Greensboro, NC when she was eight years old and graduated from Greensboro Senior High in 1955. She graduated from Women’s College of UNC and taught elementary school for several years in Burlington, Greensboro and Seneca, SC.

In 1959 she married John MacRae III in Greensboro. They moved to Friedberg, Germany in 1962 where their first son, Doug, was born. They returned to Greensboro in 1964 and had their second son, Robert.

She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro where she was a deacon, a member of the Agape Sunday School class, Hearts and Mind Circle, and the food service committee. She was a member of P.E.O. and also enjoyed involvement in her garden, book and bridge clubs. She was known for her love of cooking and for sharing food with family and friends.

Eugenia is survived by John, her husband of 63 years; sons – John Douglas MacRae (Sharon) of Raleigh, NC and Robert Thorne MacRae of Clemson, SC; grandchildren – Daniel, Drew, Patterson, Ryan, Molly and Duncan; sisters – Sara Stuart, Cindy (Jerry) Bryce, and Mary Jane (Mack) McKinney; and seven nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at River Landing Retirement Community where Eugenia lived for the past several years.

A celebration of her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro on Friday, September 16 at 2 PM. A visitation will be held immediately following the service in the Virginia Gilmer room.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
