Ethel Chappell Glenn

Ethel Glenn was born March 30, 1926, in Dallas, Texas, to Frank and Pearl Wallace

Chappell. She was a graduate of North Dallas High School and in 1943 received a BFA in Drama Education from The University of Texas at Austin. She began her teaching career with her mother’s private school, The Dallas Academy of Speech and Drama, where she remained until 1967. She earned a Master’s Degree in Speech at The University of North Texas in Denton, then served on the faculty at Bishop College in Dallas for four years. She returned to The University of Texas at Austin and received a

Ph. D. in Speech Communication in 1972, the same year she moved to Greensboro to teach at UNCG. She retired from UNCG in 1995 as a Professor Emerita.

During her years as a university professor, she was an active member of The Speech Communication Association, The Southern Speech Communication Association, The Carolinas Speech Communication Association, The International Listening Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary Society for Women Educators. She served a term as President of the Listening Association, the Carolinas Association, and the Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Committee. She served on numerous committees in all the organizations. She was author or co-author of two textbooks, 15 journal articles, and more than 20 convention papers. As an administrator, she was Director of the Communication Studies Division at UNCG, Teacher Education Coordinator for the Department of Communication and Theatre, Director of Graduate Studies, and worked on numerous university-wide committees.

After retirement she became an active member of The English Speaking Union, serving a term as program chairman, a Board member and frequent volunteer at the Broach Theatre, and a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Disciple Bible Study, chaired the Worship Council, the Library Committee, The Wednesday Church Night Committee, was active in outreach efforts, and served on several other teams. She loved the ladies of Circle 7. She was a Certified Lay Speaker and taught for several years in the Lay Speaker’s School. She was an avid reader, fierce bridge player, contented knitter, and curious traveler. In recent years her greatest volunteer passion was assisting the teachers and students of the Washington Montessori School in Greensboro.

She is survived by her four children, Chris and his wife Barbara of Austin, Texas; Patricia of the home; Phillip and his wife Liliana of Natick, Mass.; and Paul and his wife Irene of Auklandshamn, Norway. She was a loving grandmother to ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, the Reverend Wallace Chappell of Dallas and his wife Lawrean.
