David was born on February 8, 1948, in Edgecombe County, to the late Ernest and Mattie Farmer. He grew up working on a farm; it was here he learned the value of hard work and dedication. After graduating from high school, David proudly served his country in the United States Army, receiving the National Defense Service Medal for his service in the Vietnam War.
Following his service, David pursued higher education. It was at Kittrell College in Kittrell, North Carolina, that he met his wife. Together, they transferred to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in Greensboro. Their love flourished, and they celebrated more than 50 years of marriage.
David earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from NC A&T and was honored to have had a long and successful career in the field of textiles. He worked for Cone Mills for over 30 years as a supervisor and plant manager of quality control. He was highly respected in his field and known for his integrity, honesty, and kindness toward his clients, colleagues, and co-workers. David was proud to have a second career as a detention training officer and retired from the Guilford County Sheriff's Department.
Outside of work, David had a passion for traveling. He traveled extensively in Europe, and
visited nearly every state in the U.S. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored. He never missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events and school performances.
David is survived by his loving wife, Hazel, their daughter, Jennifer (Matthew), and three grandchildren, Winston, Jane, and Landon. He is also survived by two brothers, Rayfield Farmer (Shirley) of Greensboro and Ernest Farmer (Brenda) of Bethel, N.C., as well as a sister, Eraine Farmer of Washington, D.C. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A celebration of David's life will be held at Westminster Gardens Cemetery, located at 3601 Whitehurst Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410, at 1:00 p.m. on April 29, 2023. Express your sympathy for the bereaved family- send a flower arrangement to the Westminster Cemetery.
