Memorial service will be held at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel today, Friday, July 12, 2013 at 2:00 pm followed by inurnment at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
The family received visitors last night at his daughter’s home from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Maddox. He is survived by his children, Mary Anne Nixon, Daniel Maddox, Doug Maddox and Betsy Pope; two grandchildren David Baysinger and Sara Brown; and three great grandchildren, Alexander and Hannah Brown and Emmah Maddox Baysinger.
He graduated from Duke University in 1942 with a BA in accounting. He belonged to Sigma Chi Fraternity. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 30, 1942 as a Private and was discharged in November 1945 as a Captain of Field Artillery, having served in Europe for two years, always with a superior rating. He was a Company Commander and received four battle stars.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Deaton on December 27, 1945 and was blessed with 53 years of married life until her death in 1999. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He attended graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill in 1946 and received his CPA certificate in 1948. In 1950 he joined Burlington Industries in Greensboro, from which he retired in 1982 as Assistant Accounting Department Head.
He participated all his life in many sports and competed with some success on a state level in tennis, softball and bowling. He was an avid reader and bridge player. He became an outstanding public speaker. As a writer, 77 of his letters to the editor were published in the Greensboro News & Record.
On his retirement in 1982, he and his wife and on occasion his children, visited 45 states and 23 countries. He enjoyed a long and happy retirement and came to the end of a full life with peace and satisfaction.
