Carroll Walker Miller, 85, of Jamestown, NC, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024. Carroll was born on February 18, 1939, in Pittsburgh, PA to Daniel Vance and Gladys McNulty Walker. She was an only child but had lots of cousins and close “sisters”.
Carroll graduated in 1957 from Greensboro High School (currently Grimsley High School) and continued her education at Women’s College of Greensboro (currently University of North Carolina at Greensboro), graduating with a degree in Home Economics in 1961. While at Greensboro High School, she met the love of her life, William David Miller. They married on August 27, 1960 and during their 45 years together (before David’s passing) lived in Greensboro, NC, South Charleston, WV, Richardson, TX, and Clarkston, GA before returning to Jamestown, NC in 1980.
She worked as a substitute teacher and was very involved with Girl Scouts for many years while raising her three daughters. She enjoyed repurposing and sending greeting cards, visiting lighthouses, receiving postcards, collecting and repurposing stamps, listening to music, game night with church friends, and traveling with family and friends. She was a member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church (JPC) for 44 years. While at JPC, she and David started the Community Holiday Food Box program in the mid-1980s, which still continues today. For her volunteer work and dedication to JPC, she received the distinct honor of the Presbyterian Women Lifetime award. Carroll was known by all for her bright smile, calm demeanor, and the love of her daughters and grandchildren.
Carroll was preceded in death by her parents, husband, in-laws Dwight Skeen and Kathleen Waddell Miller, and brother-in-law Wayne Waddell Miller.
She is survived by her daughters: Cheryl Elizabeth Miller and granddogs, Liam and Zane, of Cumming, GA; Robin Carroll Shelton and grandchildren, Ryan Keith Shelton and Faith Allison Shelton, of Greensboro, NC; Allison Jane Holifield (Rob Thompson) and grandson, Hunter James Holifield, of Grand Rapids, MI. Other surviving relatives include: sister-in-law, Jane Miller of Greensboro, NC; nephew, Benjamin (Utahnah) Miller of Charlotte, NC; niece, Sally (Tim) Marion of Greensboro, NC; former sister-in-law, Carolyn Miller of Greensboro, NC.
A very special THANK YOU to Karen Budusky of Jamestown, NC and other caregivers who took very good care of her over the years.
Visitation will be held at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 W Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 from 6 to 8pm. Memorial service will be held at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, 1804 Guilford College Road, Jamestown, NC on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 11am (with a live streaming option available). As Carroll was an avid sports fan, cheering on UNC, NCSU and the Atlanta Braves, the family encourages anyone attending the memorial service on November 30 to wear Carolina Blue, NC State Red, or their favorite team color.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, Epilepsy Foundation of NC, or Jamestown Presbyterian Church Community Outreach Fund.
