Carolyn finished her courageous, 17 year long battle with cancer on Friday, October 20th, 2017. She was born September 28th, 1935 to the late Dale Cleston Sr. and Olive Phillips Routh. She graduated from Sumner High School and went on to earn her degree in Primary Education from High Point University.
Carolyn pursued her lifelong passion for education first as a primary teacher in Yadkin County and High Point City School Systems. After her children were born, she loved being a stay at home mother. Later she taught preschool for nine years at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. She retired from there after the death of her mother to help care for her father.
Carolyn loved mission work and held many church offices. She helped start a monthly meal at Greensboro Urban Ministry (Weaver House) and the Samaritans Purse Shoebox projects at her church, St. John's United Methodist, both ministries continue on today.
Family was always most important to Carolyn, second only to her relationship with Jesus Christ. She will be remembered for her love, compassion, strength, and quiet determination. She always looked for the positive in situations and her sense of humor brought joy and smiles to everyone she met. She fought the good fight, she finished the race, and she kept the faith. She will be greatly missed.
Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Brinton Patterson, Ph.D of Greensboro; son Phillip Brinton Patterson of Greensboro; daughter Melissa Patterson Sherrill (Karl) of High Point; grandchildren Anna Kate Patterson of Greensboro; Lane, Spencer and Margaret (Maggie) Sherrill of High Point; step grandsons Daulton and Jarrod Rogers of Greensboro; brothers William Eugene Routh and Dale Cleston Routh, Jr. of Greensboro, and James Allen Routh (Joyce) of Rockville, Md.; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Goddaughters Terri Routh Brun of Pennsylvania and Ramona Routh Spencer of Winston Salem, NC.
The family will have a private graveside service. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 24th, from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel at 6000 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, NC.
Carolyn's family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and kindness during her illness, especially the caring angels Pat Branch and the late Pat Chambers. Thanks also for her caring physicians Dr. James Wyatt III, Dr. James Granfortuna, Mrs. Lisa Thomas PA, Dr. David Patterson, and Dr. Lennis Livesay.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making memorial contributions to Hospice Home of High Point. Our deepest thanks go to the staff of Hospice Home, as well as to family and friends who have so graciously and kindly supported us through this difficult time.
