Amanda Sue Auman Wood, a long-time resident of Jamestown, died Feb. 1 at 85. Amanda, “Susie” to those who knew her, lived most of her childhood and teenage years in Trinity. Her home sat just up the hill and across the street from a boy named William David Wood (Bill), who
would become her high school sweetheart and husband of 52 years.
Susie attended Trinity High School, where she played guard on the 1954 women’s state championship basketball team. She never lost her love for the sport and relished watching college basketball, rooting on her older daughter’s Wolfpack, her younger daughter’s Tarheels and later her granddaughter’s Blue Devils — a feat considered unfathomable by many.
Susie and Bill married in 1955, a year after high school graduation. She went on to earn her teaching degree from then High Point College and taught third and fifth grades at Allen Jay Elementary and Jamestown Elementary. Jamestown became her home in 1966, where she became an active member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir for many years and participated in other activities. Most important to her was the desire that her children grow strong in the Christian faith.
Music was a great pleasure to Susie all her life. She played the piano well, and her daughter Pamela remembers the sometimes “races to bed” against brother Eric as young children. Dad would assist as Mom played the energetic final minutes of the William Tell Overture. Susie enjoyed many performances and programs of music and supported the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.
Susie was a loving and very much loved mother. She supported her children in all their endeavors; she rejoiced when they rejoiced, and she mourned when they mourned. Later she delighted in her grandchildren and her first great-grandchild. No bit of information about them was too small that she did not want to hear and re-hear and re-hear. We will miss her sweet smile, her thoughtfulness and her gentle encouragement.
She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Wood Hopkins and Kimberley Wood; grandchildren Kelsey Hopkins Schonta, Hunter Hopkins, John McCann, Erin McCann, and great-grandchild Levi McCann, son of John and Tricia McCann. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill and son Eric Wood.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 8 at 1 p.m., to be followed by visitation in the fellowship hall at Jamestown United Methodist Church, 403 E Main St Jamestown NC 27282. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 W Gate City Blvd Greensboro 27407. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to Jamestown United Methodist Church or to Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 W Gate City Blvd Greensboro NC 27404.
