Reverend Alfred Shuler Furr, Jr., 95, accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a young adult man and lived a life of humble service to God for more than seventy years. He passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at the NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Lydia Hill Furr. He is survived by his daughter, Lydia 'Alfie' Furr Roberts of Greensboro, NC; his sons, Roger Furr and wife Jackie of Pickens, SC, and Philip Furr and wife Kay of Fredericksburg, VA; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The eldest of ten childen, Alfred's surviving siblings are Judy Harrington of Thomasville, NC, Jerry Tucker and wife Sharon of Archdale, NC, Carolyn Jones of Thomasville, NC, Christine Ferguson and husband Barney of Sophia, NC, and Gloria Stepp and husband Dale of Trinity, NC.
Alfred was born in High Point, NC on December 18, 1927 to his parents, Alfred Shuler Furr, Sr. and Clara Victoria Corder Furr.
Alfred entered service to our country on January 3, 1946 and served honorably on active duty until December 12, 1949. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal as a result of his service. His combined active and reserve service to our nation was fifteen years in the Army Air Forces, the US Air Force and the Coast Guard. He terminated his military service when he was called into the ministry.
An ordained minister in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Alfred and his wife Lydia served twelve Wesleyan and United Methodist churches in NC, SC, and VA over a twenty-six year period. While pastoring, he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Central Wesleyan College (later known as Southern Wesleyan University) and studied at Emory University.
Upon retirement, Alfred and Lydia continued service to God in prison ministry. They enjoyed traveling and, most importantly, stayed engaged in getting the gospel of Jesus Christ out to a lost and dying world.
He will be remembered for his steadfast love of Jesus and family, a quick wit, and an extensive knowledge of family history. He was loved by many and will be missed.
A celebration of Alfred's life and God's love will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. Interment with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
