He loved his career as a rural letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service. He spoke fondly of the special people on his routes and the beauty of this great county. He worked to be relied upon by the people he served and considered it a privilege.
Mr. Higgins was veteran of World War II having served in
the U. S. Army Air Corp. He attained the rank of Sgt. 1st Class during his three years in the
European Campaign and received the following medals: European African Middle Eastern
Service Medal, three Bronze Stars, one service stripe, three overseas service bars, Distinguished
Unit Badge 8th Air Force; participated in the following campaigns: Normandy, Northern France,
Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, Air Offensive Europe, European African Middle Eastern
Theater. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post # 1990 and a member of the Rural Letter
Carriers Association.
Survivors include the light of his life, his beloved wife of 67 years: Savannah “Susie” Higgins; a daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Bryan McCarty of Franklin, TN; a son and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Cathy Higgins of Old Hickory, TN;
two sisters and a brother-in-law: Betty Lorene Harris of Goodlettsville, TN, Loma and Roy Ross of Mt. Juliet; a brother-in-law: Kenneth Bowman of Asheville, NC; brother-in-law and wife: Johnny and Amy Bowman of Greeneville; many wonderful nieces and nephews; his wonderful and loving neighbors in Greeneville and Mt. Juliet: Diane Waddle, Gerry and Mary Bell Duff, Gene and Linda Ewen, and the staff of NHC at Coolsprings, to which the family wished to, extend a special thank you.
He was the son of the late Rev. Worley and Loshie Cutshaw Higgins and was preceded in death
by four brothers, H.M.”Doc”, Albert, Paul and Marcus Higgins.
An inspirational and uplifting Celebration of Life will be held at 3 pm Saturday, September 21, 2013, in the Kiser-Rose Hill Chapel. Rev. Mark Wills will officiate. Interment will follow at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mike Higgins, Ralph Higgins, Ronnie Calkin, Mike Hensley, Bryan Bailey and Randy Bowman.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 pm Friday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The Greene County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Guard will conduct a military graveside service.
