James proudly served his country in South Korea with the 3rd Battalion 21st Infantry Division. He and his unit spent 16 months patrolling mountainous areas at night. After serving James was so thankful to come back to his family and back to the Whittenburg farm where he spent his entire life.
James will be lovingly missed by his wife of 67 years, Nellie Kate Whittenburg. He will also be missed by his son Steve and wife Donna, a grandson Brad and wife Shandi and by his great granddaughter, Miss Ryleigh Whittenburg. Other family members include his brothers, Terry Whittenburg, RP Whittenburg, Paul Whittenburg, Robert Whittenburg and wife Norma Jean as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wonderful son, Jimmy Whittenburg and by his parents Ralph and Flora Whittenburg, his brother Dave; sister, Lois and sisters in law, Imogene, Joyce and JoAnn.
James will always be remembered as a fair and well respected boss at Magnavox where he worked for 41 years. He spent his days off and his retirement farming and playing golf. He was recognized for having a hole in one on every par 3 at Link Hills Country Club using the same club.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 at Kiser Rose Hill Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 8 pm in the chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Blake, pastor of Jackson Chapel where James was a member, officiating.
Interment will be on Saturday at 10 am in Jackson Chapel Cemetery.
Family and friends are asked to meet at 9 at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home to go in procession to the cemetery for the service.
The Greene County Honor Guard will provide Military Honors.
Pallbearers are Brad Whittenburg, Doug Renner, Randy Bledsoe, Tim Shelton, Billy Goodrich, Don Henry, Jason Henry, Anthony Sauceman and Richard Dobbelaere.
The family would like to say thank you to the incredible staff at Signature Health Care for the love that was provided to James while he battled dementia.
