My name is Sergeant First Class Lee Carranza of the US Army and I served a tour with Staff Sergeant James Surber in 2003-2004.  I have a message of condolences to relay to the Hipps family if you would be so kind as to forward. 

Dear Sir and Ma'am,

A dear friend just called me today with the tragic news of you son's untimely passing.  I knew Specialist Surber and had worked with him on and off during our deployment in 2003 through 2004.  We flew home together for R&R in February of 2004 to visit our families.  James smiled and joked a lot and was well liked by most of the other troops.  I always found him to pleasant, respectful, honest and with something entertaining to say.  He was a decent young man who seemed to have a bit of good old fashioned country common sense about him.  I've always known him to work hard and get the job done.  He spoke highly of his family back home.   

I know that none of my words can bring back the precious life of James, or even begin to quell the pain of your family's tragic loss.  On behalf of my myself and my wife Elizabeth, please accept our deepest condolences to your family in your time of grief.  We can only pray that the good Lord look after the lives of James Jr and Joshua in the absence of their father.  And that they grow to be strong proud men.  Please tell them their father is remembered as being a good man and a good Soldier with many friends.  Even if those friends are late to be heard from.

James Allen words cannot begin to express the ache that has now filled my heart and my life.  God blessed me when he sent you to me and now I cannot begin to imagine you not being here in my life everyday.  I love you my great son you are truely my HERO thank you for being such a great son. Sgt Surber, you were a great friend and a fellow NCO it was an honor to know you and serve with you in Iraq with the 551st Ft Eustis Va. You will be missed by all and in some way or another you helped everyone you ever met. We had some great talks not only in Iraq but after we came home. SGT Surber helped alot of Soldiers that were in time of need. One of the best NCO's with the most knowledge in 88Series.  I remember on our deployment together studying for the promotion board. I am really missing you my fellow Commrad, friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will always remember him as amongst the most reliable Sergeants within the Battalion. Never one to complain and always dedicated to getting the job done well.  I truly enjoyed working with him and knowing him.   My deepest condolences to SSG Surber's family and friends. He will be very much missed and remembered by us all.

SGT Surber you will be truely missed. You were an easy going person and was always there to help someone no matter if they were friends or not. SFC Latch and I will keep you in our prayers as well as your family. You were a great NCO. Wish you could be here with us in Afghanistan, but we know you are in our hearts.

We are better for having had SGT Surber in our lives. The world is a lesser place without a man of his character in it.  I am so grateful for the true friendship that he so freely shared with so many. I pray that James finds rest in God's everlasting arms.
