He was in the US Marine Corp from 1948-1958 as a staff sergeant in Quanice, VA and California. He was a member of the Honor Guard at President Eisenhower’s inauguration on January 20, 1953. He served in the Korean
War from September 1950- December of 1951, and the Air Force in Japan from 1946-1947.
“I loved every day of being a Marine, and that includes being in Korea,” he said. “If I was able and could go, I’d go back again. I have no regrets whatsoever. The only regret I have is taking the discharge”
He attended Bethesda Church as long as his health permitted.
He is survived by his brother: Von Ray (Aletha) of Newport; stepchildren: Naomi Blake (Johnny) and Earlin Darnell (Ada); a sister-in-law: Muncie Jones; step grandchildren: Robin Tullock, Ronnie Crum, Jeff Darnell, Teresa Darnell, Nick Darnell, and Joni Parker; step great grandchildren: Molly Parker, Mason Parker, Shelly Smith, Devin Wilcox, Jacob Tullock, Landon Darnell, Trevor Darnell, Kristen Darnell, E. J. Swatzell, Madeline Darnell and Charlotte Darnell; special friends: Danny and Jackie Waites; several great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews;
He was preceded in death by his wifes: Nellie J. McMillan and Irene McMillan; his father: Stokley J. McMillan; his mother: Gertie Lee McMillan;
brothers and sisters: Alvin McMillan, Ruth Foreman, Beatrice Foreman, Charles McMillan, Oneil McMillan, Jack McMillan and Albert McMillan; step daughter: Susie Crum and a step grandson: Larry Darnell.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 pm Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with the service at 6:00 pm in the chapel and Rev. Lynn Mercer will officiate. Interment will be held on Monday at New Bethel Cemetery at 3:00pm. Family and friends are asked to meet at 2:00 at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Mason Parker, Jeff Darnell, Devin Wilcox, Jacob Tullock, Ronnie Crum, Barry Tullock, Lyle Foreman, Nick Darnell, Molly Parker, Ella Smith and Clint Parker.
