Bill was born February 13, 1933, in Greencastle to William A. II and Esther Lawrence. He graduated from Greencastle high School in 1951. After a stint as a lineman with the phone company, Bill joined the Army. He completed Field Artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, where he completed airborne school.
After the Army, Bill returned to Greencastle and was hired by IBM. He transferred to Rochester, New York in 1960 where he met Marilyn Carnegie of Lockport, New York. They married on July 2, 1961. They had four children (Peter, Molly, Eric, and Curtis) while living in New York and New Jersey.
They returned to Greencastle in 1979, building a house on Albin Pond. Bill retired from IBM in 1987. He and Marilyn enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Bill’s hobbies included fishing, trap and skeet shooting, motorcycles, and flying. Bill was a member of the Greencastle Elks, American Legion, and the Greencastle Presbyterian Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Marilyn, his son Peter and girlfriend Sharon Ripkin (Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey), daughter Molly Jaeger and son-in-law Christian (Carmel, Indiana), son Eric (Apache Junction, Arizona), and son Curtis and daughter-in-law Lara of Greencastle, grandchildren Jensen (“Jenny”) and Liesel Jaeger, and Madelyn (“Maddie”) and Reid Lawrence.
Bill is also survived by his sister-in-law Helen Lawrence, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and Jinny Carnegie (Lockport, New York), and his nieces Cynde Fredrick, Cheri Grable, Krista Carnegie and Kathy Bowers and their families.
Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Wes Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to SAWS or Round Barn Daycare, both associated with Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 653 S County Road 100 E, Greencastle, IN 46135.
