James was born on June 14, 1926 in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana, the son of Vern and Edna (Andrews) Smith. He graduated from Tipton Schools. Then in 1944 entered into the Army, serving during WWII in Europe. Home again on orders from Gen. Eisenhower in 1946, he married Lois Elzey of Bluffton.
He was employed with the Department of National Resources as a DNR officer for 25 years and later retired from the Greencastle Schools were he had worked for 13 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police for over 69 years and the Optimist Club. He loved all aspects of the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lois in 2006; brothers Vern Jr., Darrell Max; sister Armeda; infant twin siblings Joseph and Josephine and grandson James Wood.
James is survived by his daughters Sandra Mackintosh and Cindy (husband Scott) Cooper; sister Rosalyce Grubbs; brothers Richard Smith and Keith Smith; grandchildren Jennifer (husband Chris) Menchhofer, Michelle Mackintosh, and Michael (wife Ginger) Mackintosh; great grandchildren Hannah Menchhofer, Garner (fiance’ Shelby) Menchhofer, Zachary Thom, Abby Thom, Cole Mackintosh and Makenna Mackintosh.
Services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 1:00 PM at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.
