Richard moved to Arvada, Colorado in 1958 where he stayed until 1962. He then moved to Greeley, Colorado and lived there until his passing. Richard attended Greeley West High School, graduating in 1967. On February 4, 1980, he married the love of his life, Ilona Irene Molzahn in Cuba, New Mexico. They spent their lives together until Ilona’s passing on December 23, 2005.
Richard served in the Army during the Vietnam war, rank SGT E-5, Unit 630 MPCO, from November 3, 1967, to June 7, 1969. After leaving the Army, he began his career working for Qwest Communications as a data technician AKA “telephone man.” He retired in 2008 after 38 years of service.
The things Richard loved most were spending time with his kids and grandkids, going to the gym, traveling (especially to Hawaii), watching beautiful sunsets, and working with his hands. He liked his coffee black, a good cheeseburger-PLAIN, and ice-cold diet Pepsi. Richard was an avid Denver Broncos and Elvis Presley fan and passed his love and enthusiasm for sports and rock and roll music onto his children and grandchildren.
Above all, Richard was a devoted and steadfast father and grandfather. His grandkids describe him as genuine, loveable, witty and kind. “He always had a story or something to talk about, just a great guy in general.” His kids will remember him as a man with a heart of gold, loyal and loving, hardworking, and stubborn as all get out. Richard will be remembered as a man who always took the time to be there and lend a helping hand.
