Norma Gilchrist Lord

She grew up in Kadoka, South Dakota and graduated from Kadoka High School as valedictorian in 1946. During her first two years of high school she played piano in a dance band. This six-member band played for many dances in the area up until World War II. Four of the band members entered the military and the dance band became a very pleasant memory.

Norma graduated from the University South Dakota in 1950 earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the school of Business. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, and taught in the Business Department of Brookings High School, Brookings, South Dakota.

Norma married Alan Lord in June 1951 in Redwood City, California. He was station at Camp Roberts during the Korean War. After the war ending they returned to South Dakota where she taught in the Meckling High School, in Meckling, South Dakota.

Alan and Norma moved to Sacramento, California in 1952 where she worked for the State of California in their Conservation Education Department. During that time her sons Thomas and Eric were born.

The Lords moved to Greeley in 1962. Norma tutored in the Business Department at Greeley West High School and raised her family. She was an active community volunteer. She served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and as Moderator of the First Congregation Church and had a hand in moving the old Park Church bell to the First Congregational Church. Norma served as president of the Greeley Panhellenic Association and served as chairman of the Greeley Museum Board for four years. She was a member of Chapter I, PEO, serving two years as president and two years on the state PEO board. Norma became a member of the Colonial Dames and served on the National Board as chairman and curator of their DC headquarters for many years. For a number of years Norma helped the Salvation Army by serving a hot meal at noon a couple of days a week.

She had a love for poetry and everything old and beautiful. Norma enjoyed a good game of bridge and always looked forward to playing her cards at the Senior Center.

A memorial service will be held April 6th at 2:30pm, at the First Congregational Church UCC of Greeley, 2101 16th Street, with a reception to follow.
