Fred was raised in Oakland and Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. He enjoyed boating and was a talented water skier. He attended high school at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and graduated from the School of Management at Syracuse University with degrees in Business Administration and Marketing in 1971. He received his master’s degree in Industrial Relations from Cornell University in 1973.
Fred was an entrepreneur and craftsman. He loved life, was a voracious reader of science fiction and history, and enjoyed spinning a good yarn. Favorite pastimes included documenting family history, sourcing thoughtful gifts, collecting rare books, model ships, fossils, rocks, and puzzles. He also enjoyed celebrating holidays, raising finches, woodwork, and dreaming of the future. Fred is remembered for his unique sense of humor and view of life through rose-colored glasses. He managed difficult health challenges with determination and a strong will.
Fred served many roles in the family business, The H-P Stores, between 1973 and 1982, before rebranding and operating it as Finders until 1984. That year, he moved to Santa Monica, California and began working as a headhunter and life insurance broker. At the R.E. LEE Group, he served in management roles between 1989 and 1994. Fred worked as a consultant for various businesses and fields including: publishing at Mozena Corporation, telecommunications at Clear Network and OmegaNet (Iscomp Systems), gaming for Core Partners, and investing at Core Capital Management. Additionally, he pursued entrepreneurship as a co-founder and CEO of Graviton, between 1998 and 2000, and as CEO of 14West, from 2004 to 2014. Fred enjoyed leading business teams, was proud of his work as a strategist and executive, and loved the process of building a business soup to nuts.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Kim (Danberry) Feld; four children, son Michael Ebner of Loveland, Colorado; daughter, Tara Feld of Oakland, California; daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie and Clayton Ramey of Loveland, Colorado, and Amanda and Jonathan Klein of Oakland, California; five grandchildren, Riley, Layne, Callan, Maya, and Theodore. Fred was loved by many and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Friends and family will be received at Foundations Church, Loveland, at 10:30am on Friday, March 6, 2015. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be received at Foundations Church at 1380 Denver Avenue, Loveland, Colorado, in care of Kim Feld.
