Christopher Shannon, also known by the name on his German passport—Kristoph von Steiner (he had a different name on his Russian passport, too, but we don't have a typeset for that), passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his Loveland home on 20 September 2017 at the age of 38. He's at peace now—meaning he is not only reunited with the loved ones he so dearly missed, but must be surrounded by a limitless supply of Legos in every shape and size, along with colour-coded stacking containers in which to organize them and a turntable that keeps his record collection running non-stop.
As a young man, “Chris,” as he was then-known, maintained F-15 aircraft on the flight line in the United States Air Force from 1997-2001, stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and Seymore Johnson AFB in North Carolina. Photographic evidence suggests that his duties as a crew chief included inventing outlandish pranks, hosting hilarious theme-parties, and generally serving as the friend everyone could count on.
Outside the military, he loved being an “engi-nerd,” whether he was using his education working in the field of fluid dynamics, rewiring the house, building model rockets with a young friend, or designing the ultimate dog bed. He was thoroughly a Coloradoan who loved hockey, the Broncos, outdoor mountain-y pursuits, and Phish concerts. He was immensely proud of his Prussian/German heritage, and in true embodiment of the Prussian Virtues he lived by, few people knew of his artistic and musical talents, or his mastery of over seven languages, but everyone who ever talked to him knew the things he believed in—love, honor, loyalty, and the Bayern-Munich Football team!
The latter half of his life was devoted to helping secure an independent state for the Kurdish people he knew and loved—his spirit lives on in friends and family in Iraqi Kurdistan and among the Peshmerga forces on the front lines fighting the oppressive daesh regime.
Sometime around 2012, Kristoph placed an ad on craigslist for someone with whom to practice speaking French or German. The resulting responses yielded a stalker who harassed him with cryptic rune-messages and offerings of sports cards for the next four years. Eventually he gave up and let her move in with him. Resigned to his fate, he began referring to her as his wife in late 2016, when they bought a town house adjoining her mother's home. It was here that he happily spent the final months of his life playing house-husband and enjoying the company of the close friends and in-laws he lived with.
Kristoph was preceded in death by his beloved Grandmother, Gretchen Boulais (Rummell); his Uncles James Lambert and Jeffery Lambert; Mother Rochelle Whaley (Lambert); and many friends and brothers in arms. He is survived by his father Helmut Shannon of Topeka, KS; Aunt Helga Barton of Lawrence, KS; Aunt Elsa Werknise of Coburg, Germany; Uncle Kelly Lambert of Traverse City, MI; cousins Gretchen, April, Roslyn and Grace Lambert; Cousins Angela and Mitchell Barton; half-siblings Andrew Shannon of Lincoln, NE, and April Shannon of Colorado Springs; wife Monika, and their three “kids,” Sébastien, Myra and Zoey.
