Southlake, Texas --- Louis (Lou) Merwin Perkett, died Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Grapevine, after a lengthy series of illnesses. Born July 31, 1942, in Glens Falls NY, Lou was the son of the late Edward Frank Perkett and the late Luetta Merwin Perkett. He was married for 34 years to Ellen Jarman Perkett of Fish Creek, WI, and Southlake, TX. In addition to his wife, Ellen, survivors include his brother Charles Edward Perkett of Salem, NH, and cousins Sally Little of London, Ontario, Canada; Charles Richard Perkett of Horseshoe Bay, TX; John Merwin of Collingwood, Ontario, Canada; Cynthia Fair of Meadowlakes, TX; and many second cousins. Louis also will be missed by his many friends at the LDS church in Colleyville, TX, and at the Southlake Senior Center, as well as by his two dear “Pomeranian friends”, Bronson and Braxton. Lou graduated high school from Queensbury Central School in Queensbury, NY, in June, 1960. He enlisted in the Navy in September, 1963, and graduated from the Navy’s Great Lakes Illinois Training Center in May, 1964. He received advanced training in computer operation and maintenance at the Navy’s San Diego base, graduating in November, 1965. Lou served two tours of duty (1965 – 1969) as a computer technician aboard the guided missile frigate USS Belknap, circling 20 miles off the coast of Viet Nam, including the Tonkin Gulf, and taking on rescued pilots and crews. Lou traveled to many foreign ports including Greece, Japan, and Vietnam and crossed the Arctic Circle, the Equator, and International Date Line participating in associated naval initiation ceremonies. While assigned to shore duty at the San Diego base, Lou earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer Engineering from Grossmont College. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1970, Lou worked as a maintenance engineer for computer service companies in Boston, MA, Rochester, NY, St Louis, MO, and Dallas, TX. Louis received a Bachelor of Business Management degree from North Texas State University in Denton, TX, in May 1978. He worked as a programmer-analyst for Mobil Oil Corp. He taught the first “Computer Programming for the Physically-Handicapped” class at El Centro College. He worked as a contract programmer-analyst for several firms and as a software systems analyst for JP Morgan Chase. For several years, Lou had been a volunteer driver for the Call-A-Ride Southlake service, transporting many elderly riders to and from the Senior Center or doctor’s appointments. Lou enjoyed baking apple and raspberry pies and a variety of cookies. He also enjoyed building and decorating plastic model vintage car kits and collecting teddy bears including Steif, Rykes, themed sets of bears and a great variety of “cute & cuddly” stuffed animals. The J.E. Foust & Son Funeral Home has handled Lou’s cremation. A remembrance gathering for Louis is scheduled for Friday, July 29, at 2:00 PM at The Marq, 285 Shady Oaks Drive, Southlake, TX, 76092. Burial arrangements are being handled by the Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home in Queensbury, NY. Interment will be in Pine View Cemetery, Quaker Road, Queensbury, NY next to his parents.
